They feel the United States is helping to support Israeli interests and power and this puts the Palestinians (who most Arab nations support) at a disadvantage.  A key event in this conflict was the Munich massacre. The United States is also unpopular in the Middle East because they have asserted their influence in aggressive ways during the Gulf Wars where they invaded and engaged in combat in Iraq, eventually deposing of Saddam Hussein in the Iraq War.  Historically, the United States has not been supportive of the Iranian Revolution and there has been hostage takings and cold diplomatic relations between the two countries since the late 1970s when the Iranian Revolution occurred. In 1979 Iranians held American diplomats and citizens hostage for 444 days.
