By claiming this phrase for herself and adapting it, Truth asserted both her race and her gender.

She believed in equality between men and women as much as between whites and blacks. In her speech, she expresses in many ways how she thinks women can do as much as men can ("I am as strong as any man"), and therefore should be given the same rights.
