Miguel worries excessively about things beyond his control, and his worries often interfere with his life. He avoids driving because he worries about car accidents. He calls his parents twice a day because he worries they are dead. He checks his credit card statement three times a day because he worries about identity theft. Miguel probably suffers from   Obsessive–compulsive disorder.  

OCD is a mental disorder in which people tend to check things repeatedly , create routines because they are worried and are obsessed with certain activities. Therefore, they create a routine that makes them feel secure. In this particular case, Miguel is worried about having a car accident, about death, about life events in general so he has created a checking routine that is also affecting his family (parents and wife) .
