Many Federal Courts have lifetime appointments, that is, once you are on you are on for life.

This allows Judges to develop a body of work over time that is largely shielded from shifting political winds.

These Judges, however, first have to get through the door. The confirmation process, especially in recent memory, is often a political bloodbath.

Some states do the Judicial Branch differently, having regular elections for their judges. This means that Judges run like any other politician. Their job at the end is just different.

Additionally, Courts can be susceptible to political pressure during budget season. Courts rarely have the ability to levy enough in the way of legal fees to self-sustain, so budgets can come from legislature. If the legislature is upset with the Court, this can turn into a political process.
