In the solar system earth is the third closest planet to the sun after mercury and venus. it is at a distance of 149.6 million kilometers from the sun. earth's closest neighbors are venus and mars. venus is similar in size and structure to earth, has a toxic atmosphere and has surface temperatures hot enough to melt lead. mars is half the diameter of earth, and has very cold temperatures.
