When using wooden pallets to store batteries, place the pallets on sand or gravel?

Gravel, due to the weight of the batteries on that of the wooden pallet, it is likely to sink in the sand slightly, whereas as gravel has a larger surface area, it will support the weight and not be difficult to remove after storage.
