COURSE PAPER: SOURCES AND REFERENCES

By now you have chosen a topic for your course paper. Now you will need to find sources (or references) that relate to the topic you have chosen. A source is something that lets a reader know where a piece of information comes from. You use these all the time when writing a report, so you will need to use them for this paper.
Sources come in many forms: books, magazines, periodicals, encyclopedias, internet sites, newspapers. The list could go on. Your goal here is to begin hunting for information that tells about the paper you are going to write. Look through magazine articles, or chapters from books, or sections from the newspaper, or websites from the internet. When you have found a source relating to your topic, make sure to copy it and print it out so that you have it for future use.
When you do find a source, there are some things you will need to write down so that you can reference it later. Get the following information from each source:

title of the article, book, or periodical,
the source (name of magazine, periodical, book, web site, etc.),
author(s),
page number(s)
place of publication
and date or year of publication

It is important to write this information down so that you can use it later when you need to cite quotes or examples from these sources. Completing the steps above WILL SAVE YOU TIME later when you are writing your paper.
Please use the next page to write in your sources and references. Follow closely the guidelines given to you.
