It leads to ice swimming on water, thereby enabling fish and other water based creatures to survive the winter easier. (If water didn't have this effect life would be totally different…)The anomalous (note spelling) expansion of water around freezing point is absolutely essential for life on Earth. If it did not occur, ice would be heavier than water so would sink. This would allow all water bodies to freeze solid instead of the surface only freezing, which then protects the water beneath from the freezing air temperatures. The ice works as a very good insulator (which is why igloos and snow caves are relatively warm). In addition, in a lake the ice covering expands as it becomes colder, lifting itself off the surface of the lake to allow for air to continue to dissolve in the water; essential for aquatic animals during freezing conditions.
