Problem 5 There is a common classroom physics demo that involves a bowling ball and a pendulum where a
bowling ball is release from a person's nose, it swings out and back. Due to conservation
of energy
when the bowling ball returns it barely touches the person's nose. For this problem, the demo is
altered so that a student stands at each side of the pendulum in the position so that the bowling ball
would only touch their nose. If the student who releases the bowling ball is 5 ft 2 in tall and the student
on the opposite side is 5 ft 8 in tall, we know the taller student would not get hit by the ball because the
ball would only rise to 5 ft 2 in. However, if the student releasing the bowling ball sneezes the instant
they release the ball and give it a kick of 6 fts, does the taller student have a broken nose? In other
words, would the bowling ball reach the height of 5 ft 8 in?
