The continents were in fact on different places than they are now, and that shouldn't weird us out since we know that they are moving constantly. In the past, there was a time when there was no land mass on the poles, but instead, all continents were around the equator and at the mid-latitudes, and since there was no ice caps, the Earth was much warmer, as well as the sea level being much higher than what it is now. This created perfect conditions for tropical flora and fauna to spread out in most areas.

As the continents continued to move, and some went further north and south, this flora and fauna disappeared from the regions that we can not imagine nowadays that could support tropical flora or fauna on them.
