Why is a tensional or a normal force called a support force?

The Tensional or normal force is called a support force because :

Tensional forces are present in strings or wires when pulled from both ends. The tensional force tries to keep the string at a place ( i.e. support the string ) from the forces that are been applied at both ends of the string. while

A normal force acts on an object at rest in an opposite direction to the gravitational force acting on the object. therefore both forces support the object and can be described as support forces.

Hence we can conclude that the Tensional or normal force is called a support force because, they act in opposite direction to an applied force.
