A high serve will prevent your opponent from executing a strong smash. Instead, a lob or a drop is more expected from your opponent (unless they can do a jump smash).

There is a place for jumping in badminton. But generally speaking, not for beginners/intermediates. Once you master that position, that's the time you can start jumping. When the ball is too high, there is time to get behind the shuttle and jump.
