What you can use is coulomb's inverse square law that states that force varies inversly as the square of distance. It menas that the force is calculated by dividing by distance squared. what this does is essentially as the distance doubles, the forces is reduced by a factor of 4 or can be divided by 4. Force at 0.5m=2.3328N. And brings you ti the answer

It is given that,

The distance between the spheres was, d = 0.9 m

We have to find the force between the two sphere when the distance was decreased to d' = 0.5 m

The force acting between two charged particles is given by :

$F=k\dfrac{q_1q_2}{r^2}$

i.e. F is inversely proportional to the square of distance between the charges. Let F' is the force when distance is decreased.

So, $\dfrac{F}{F'}=(\dfrac{d'}{d})^2$

$\dfrac{0.72}{F'}=(\dfrac{0.5}{0.9})^2$

On solving, we get : F' = 2.33 N

Hence, on decreasing distance the force between the charges increases.
