The basic properties (parts) of a wave include: frequency, amplitude, wavelength and speed.  Frequency is a measure of how many waves pass a point in a certain amount of time. Amplitude is a measure of the distance between a line through the middle of a wave and a crest or trough. Wavelength is a measure of the distance from the crest on one wave to the crest on the very next wave. Speed is a measure of the distance a wave travels in an amount of time. For transverse waves, the waves move in perpendicular direction to the source of vibration.  For longitudinal waves, the waves move in parallel direction to the source of vibration .  They are similar in the sense that energy is transferred in the form of waves. An example of transverse wave is shaking the end of a rope up and down . An example of longitudinal wave is compressions and rarefactions moving through a spring.
