A United States Navy ship, on its present eastward course in the western north Pacific Ocean, would pass directly through the eye of a westward-moving typhoon. (It may help to make a sketch of the scenario.) The ship still has time to safely divert around the typhoon to minimize its impact. What would be the commanding officer’s wisest plan for safely navigating around the typhoon - to veer to the north of, or to the south of, the storm? Using concepts discussed in chapter 16, explain the reasoning behind your answer.
