One way to visualize atmospheric pressure is to imagine a wedge-shaped column of air that extends from the surface to the top of the atmosphere. The weight of this column causes atmospheric pressure. There are proposals to send a robotic spacecraft to Venus that will deploy a balloon that will float in the upper atmosphere and study the planet. Explain why being higher in the atmosphere would reduce the atmospheric pressure on the spacecraft and allow it to survive for a longer period of time.
