(Enem - 2013) Among the substances used for water treatment is aluminum sulfate which, in an alkaline medium, forms particles suspended in water, to which the impurities present in the medium adhere. The separation method commonly used to remove the aluminum sulfate with adhered impurities is:

When aluminium sulfate is added to impure water with particulate impurities, it causes these particulate impurities to clump together and form a bigger, sizeable floc. The impurities even go as far as adhering to the surface of the aluminium sulfate. This process of causing particulate impurities to clump together is known as flocculation and coagulation.

These resultant flocs of particulate impurities, especially the ones around the aluminium sulfate are then let to separate out using simple Sedimentation/Flotation principles.

These principles work on the basis of denser particles sinking to the bottom of the fluid and less dense particles floating, the denser aluminium sulfate with impurities sinks to the bottom and is collected there.

The impurities/flocs that do not sink are then removed using filtration.

Quando o sulfato de alumínio é adicionado à água impura com impurezas particuladas, faz com que essas impurezas se agrupem e forme um bloco maior e considerável. As impurezas chegam a aderir à superfície do sulfato de alumínio. Esse processo de fazer com que as impurezas particuladas se agrupem é conhecido como floculação e coagulação.

Esses flocos resultantes de impurezas particuladas, especialmente aqueles ao redor do sulfato de alumínio, são então separados usando princípios simples de Sedimentação / Flotação.

Esses princípios funcionam com base em partículas mais densas afundando no fundo do fluido e partículas menos densas flutuando, o sulfato de alumínio mais denso com impurezas afunda no fundo e é coletado lá.

As impurezas / flocos que não afundam são então removidos usando filtração.
