At a depth of 10.9 km, the Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench of the Pacific Ocean is the deepest known point in the Earth’s seabed hydrosphere. Yet, in 1960, Donald Walsh and Jacques Piccard reached the Challenger Deep in the Bathyscaphe Trieste. On March 26, 2012, James Cameron also reached the Challenger deep in his Deepsea Challenger. Assuming that seawater has a uniform density of 1024 kg/m3, what is approximately the hydrostatic pressure (in atm) that the vessels had to withstand at that depth?
