An axle passes through a pulley. Each end of the axle has a string that is tied to a support. A third string is looped many times around the edge of the pulley and the free end attached to a block of mass mb , which is held at rest. When the block is released, the block falls downward. Consider clockwise to be the positive direction of rotation, frictional effects from the axle are negligible, and the string wrapped around the disk never fully unwinds. The rotational inertia of the pulley is 12MR2 about its center of mass. How many forces are applied to the pulley-axle system, and how many torques are applied to the pulley about its center when the block is released from rest

Glass is transparent to visibile light under normal conditions; however, at extremely high intensities, glass will absorb most of the light incident upon it. this works through a process known as multiphoton absorption. in this process, several photons are absorbed at the same time. if very intense light whose photons carry 2ev of energy is shined onto a material with a band gap of 4ev, that light can be absorbed through two-photon absorption, because two photons have the right amount of energy to bridge the band gap. what is the minimum number of photons of 800-nm light that are needed to equal or exceed the band gap of fused silica glass

Avertical clean glass piezometer tube has an inside diameter of d = 1 mm and is used to measure pressure in a horizontal pipe carrying water as shown. due to pressure in the pipe, the water at 20c rises into the tube to a height h. if the water pressure in the pipe is p = 500 pa gauge, estimate the height h: (a) without considering surface tension (b) with surface tension (capillary) effects. the contact angle  can be assumed at 30 deg
