A ball is thrown straight up from the edge of the roof of a building. A second ball is dropped from the roof a time of 1.09 s later. You may ignore air resistance.

A-If the height of the building is 20.0 m , what must the initial speed be of the first ball if both are to hit the ground at the same time?

B-Consider the same situation, but now let the initial speed V0 of the first ball be given and treat the height h of the building as an unknown. What must the height of the building be for both balls to reach the ground at the same time for V0= 8.75 m/s.

C-If V0 is greater than some value Vmax , a value of h does not exist that allows both balls to hit the ground at the same time. Solve for Vmax .

D-If V0 is less than some value Vmin , a value of h does not exist that allows both balls to hit the ground at the same time. Solve for Vmin .

You and a friend (alex) are at a a tree-top adventure park .. . part of the course requires you to climb up a rope. you both climb the same rope in the same amount of time. however, the tension in the rope is greater when alex climbs. who did the most work? alex did - more tension means more force - more force means more work was done you did - less tension means less force - less force means more work was done to find the work done, the force exerted and distance moved are multiplied. a couch is moved twice before you are happy with its placement. the same force was used to move the couch both times. if more work is done the first time it is moved, what do you know about the distance it was moved? when more work was done, the couch was moved less. when more work was done, the couch was moved further. when more work was done, the couch wasn't moved at all. when more work was done, the couch was moved the same distance.

The particle in a two-dimensional well is a useful model for the motion of electrons around the indole ring (3), the conjugated cycle found in the side chain of tryptophan. we may regard indole as a rectangle with sides of length 280 pm and 450 pm, with 10 electrons in the conjugated p system. as in case study 9.1, we assume that in the ground state of the molecule each quantized level is occupied by two electrons. (a) calculate the energy of an electron in the highest occupied level. (b) calculate the frequency of radiation that can induce a transition between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied levels. 9.27 electrons around the porphine ring (4), the conjugated macrocycle that forms the structural basis of the heme group and the chlorophylls. we may treat the group as a circular ring of radius 440 pm, with 20 electrons in the conjugated system moving along the perimeter of the ring. as in exercise 9.26, assume that in the ground state of the molecule quantized each level is occupied by two electrons. (a) calculate the energy and angular momentum of an electron in the highest occupied level. (b) calculate the frequency of radiation that can induce a transition between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied levels.
