In space (no gravity or friction), you throw a ball with mass 0.1 kg at a target with mass 1 kg. you throw the ball at a speed of 4 m/s. when the ball impacts the target, it sticks to it and they drift off together.
1) how much energy is in the translational energy of the block+ball system after the collision?
2) how much of the initial translational kinetic energy of the ball was converted to internal energy in this collision? keinitial-kefinal= j
3) the initial temperatures of the ball and block are 300k. by how much does the entropy of the entire system increase in the collision? assume all the energy stays in the system, which reaches thermal equilibrium. you can also assume that the temperature is constant in the calculation.
sfinal-sinitial = j/k
4) how much did the dimensionless entropy, s/k, change?

You and a friend (alex) are at a a tree-top adventure park .. . part of the course requires you to climb up a rope. you both climb the same rope in the same amount of time. however, the tension in the rope is greater when alex climbs. who did the most work? alex did - more tension means more force - more force means more work was done you did - less tension means less force - less force means more work was done to find the work done, the force exerted and distance moved are multiplied. a couch is moved twice before you are happy with its placement. the same force was used to move the couch both times. if more work is done the first time it is moved, what do you know about the distance it was moved? when more work was done, the couch was moved less. when more work was done, the couch was moved further. when more work was done, the couch wasn't moved at all. when more work was done, the couch was moved the same distance.

The dipole moment of the water molecule (h2o) is 6.17x10^-30 c.m. consider a water molecule located at the origin whose dipole moment p points in the +x-direction. a chlorine ion ( of charge-1.60x10^-19c , is located at x=3.00x10^-9m . assume that is much larger than the separation d between the charges in the dipole, so that the approximate expression for the electric field along the dipole axis can be used. a) find the magnitude of the electric force that the water molecule exerts on the chlorine ion. b) what is the direction of the electric force. -x-direction or +x-direction c) is this force attractive or repulsive?
