Two halves of a mold (cope and drag) are weighted down to keep them from separating due to the pressure exerted by the molten metal. consider a solid, spherical casting, 20 cm in diameter, that is being produced by sand casting. the riser used in the process is open to the atmosphere. each flask is 50 cm by 50 cm and 35 cm deep. the parting line is at the middle of the part.
(a) estimate the clamping force required to prevent separation of the cope and drag. assume the molten metal is aluminum and the cope and drag are made using silica sand.
(b) would the position of the parting line influence the clamping force required? explain.
