A swimmer increases her speed as she approaches the end of the pool. Her acceleration is in the same direction as her motion.

The acceleration or deceleration of a swimmer at any given time in a swimming race or competition is gotten by the sum of the propulsion forces (+) minus the frontal drag forces (-).

Note that If the swimmer's propulsion is greater than his drag forces, then The swimmer will be accelerating.

The force that causes a swimmer to accelerate across a pool is called  Drag force.

As the swimmer moves forward, he or she pushes water and this pushed  water also pushes back, resulting in a drag.
