surfactant disrupts the cohesion between water molecules on the alveolar surface, decreasing surface tension and elevating compliance. this results in a lung apparatus which is easier to inflate, and represents the example of importance of compliance, or the degree to which the lungs increase in volume relative to a change in pressure.
