Imagine that you lead a healthcare organization. As part of your job, you provide feedback to staff regarding the decisions that they make. Read the scenario below. Think about the decision-making skills displayed by the team members as you read the scenario.

Scenario
James, Sarah, and Dr. Sharp work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. James, an admissions clerk, welcomes patients and gathers necessary information. Sarah, an X-ray technologist, takes X-rays for patients. Dr. Sharp, a physician, assesses patients, makes patient diagnoses, and develops treatment plans for patients.

Recently, a patient named Rob arrived at the healthcare center with a lot of ankle pain. He had fallen while walking his dog through the park. James feels stressed out because so many patients have arrived today. He quickly hands Rob a clipboard and asks him to fill out all of his information. Rob asks if the healthcare center takes his type of insurance, and James responds that he’s sure they do. After getting the paperwork back from Rob, James types it up in the patient’s electronic health record and makes copies for Sarah and Dr. Sharp.

Sarah welcomes Rob when he arrives for his X-ray. Rob says he worries that he broke his ankle. Sarah responds, “It’s probably just a sprain. It’s hard to break your ankle when you’re just out walking.” She takes an X-ray of Rob’s ankle. Rob mentions that he’s in a lot of pain, and that he hopes the phsyician will see him soon. Sarah reassures Rob that it will be a short wait. After going to see another patient, Sarah provides Rob’s X-ray to Dr. Sharp.

Dr. Sharp examines the X-ray and sees that Rob broke his ankle. She shares this information with him and recommends that he wear a cast for 8 weeks. Rob tells Dr. Sharp that the X-ray technologist thought his ankle was probably not broken. Dr. Sharp apologizes to Rob for her colleague’s misjudgment. She writes Rob a prescription to manage his ankle pain and then refers Rob to a physician who can make his cast.

Now that you’ve read the scenario, think about each action that James, Sarah, and Dr. Sharp took. Which habits and behaviors that lead to poor decisions can you recognize in the actions of these members of the healthcare team? How could they improve their decision-making skills in this scenario? Do you see any examples of good decision making?
