Consider our polynomial to be
     3x^2 + 12x + 9
Factoring is one way to write our polynomial in an equivalent form. Notice that 3 is a GCF for all the terms. If we divide 3 out of each term of our expression, we can also write our polynomial as
     3( x^2 + 4x + 3)
Now, we need two numbers whose sum is 4 and whose product is 3. In this case, it would have to be 1 and 2. Therefore we can also write our polynomial in the factored form:
     3(x + 3)(x + 1)

You can find the area of a rectangle by multiplying the length and height. so multiply 1/2*7/4(which is the simpler version of 1 3/4) and you get 7/8 as your answer.
