Two classmates got together over the weekend to do their assigned history reading. tess can read 1 page per minute, while ronald can read 4 pages per minute. when they met, tess had already read 51 pages, and ronald had already gotten through 15 pages. after a while, they had both read the same number of pages. how long did that take? how many pages had each one read?

Let the number of minutes be x.

Tess = 51 + 1x
Ronald = 15 + 4x

When both read the same number of pages :
51 + 1x = 15 + 4x
3x = 36
x = 12


Answer : The had read the books for 12 minutes.


Tess:

1 mins = 1 page
12 mins = 1 x 12 = 12 pages

He has read 12 pages

Ronald :

1 min = 4 pages
12 mins = 4 x 12 = 48 pages

He has read 48 pages


Tess had read 12 pages and Ronald has read 48 pages during that 12 minutes.
