Daniel and his dad went diving for lobsters and caught three. the lobsters weighed what is the total weight of the lobsters daniel caught?

Lobster 1 : 1 7/16
Lobster 2 : 2 1/8
Lobster 3 : 1 1/4

In order for Daniel & his dad to find out how much all of these lobsters weighed, they simply need to add these weights together! :)

However, due to the fact that none of these lobsters have the same denominators (bottom number in a fraction), we have to find their LCD (lowest common denominator)!

So, let's look at our denominators :

16, 8, 4

Now, what do all three of these numbers have in common? They ALL multiply into 16! 

16 goes in once, 8 goes in twice, and 4 goes in four times!

So, we must change the fractions so that all three have the same denominators.

1 7/16 stays the same, because it already has a denominator of 16! :)

However, 2 1/8 & 1 1/4 must change because they have different ones.

2 1/8 : Remember, 8 goes into 16 twice, so multiply the fraction by 2/2.

2 1/8 × 2/2 = 2 2/16 ← 2 1/8

1 1/4 : Remember, 4 goes into 16 four times, so multiply the fraction by 4/4.

1 1/4 × 4/4 = 1 4/16 ← 1 1/4

So, our new fractions are :

1 7/16 , 2 2/16 , 1 4/16

Now, add these together.

1 7/16 + 2 2/16 + 1 4/16 = ?

Add the whole numbers together first.

1 + 2 + 1 = 4 →our whole number

Then, add together the numerators (top numbers in a fraction).

7 + 2 + 4 = 13 →our numerator

**Remember ** When adding/subtracting fractions together, never do anything to the denominator. The denominator always stays the same. 

Now, we put our final fraction together.

4 13/16

So, all three lobsters weighed 4 13/16
