In order to add 1 ⁄ 4 and 2 ⁄ 5, the denominators have to be the same. This means multiplying both the numerator and denominator of each fraction by the opposite fraction's denominator. 1 ⁄ 4 + 2 ⁄ 5

( 1 ⁄ 4 × 5 ⁄ 5 ) + ( 2 ⁄ 5 × 4 ⁄ 4 )

(1 × 5)/(4 × 5) + (2 × 4)/(5 × 4)

5 ⁄ 20 + 8 ⁄ 20 = 13 ⁄ 20
