Part A: To solve this problem, I used substitution.

y = 8x - 9

y = 4x - 1

8x - 9 = 4x - 1

First, I will add 9 to both sides to eliminate it from the left side.  The constant on the left side of the equation became 8.

8x - 9 + 9 = 4x - 1 + 9

8x = 4x + 8

I will subtract 4x from both sides of the equation.

4x = 8

I will divide both sides by 4 to isolate the variable.

4x/4 = 8/4

x = 2

In this system of equations, x is equal to 2.  I will plug it into the equations to solve for y.

y = 8(2) - 9

y = 4(2) - 1

y = 16 - 9

y = 8 - 1

y = 7

y = 7

In this system of equations, y is equal to 7.  The solution for this system of equations is (2, 7).

Part B: In a system of equations, the ordered pair that satisfies both of the equations is the point of intersection.  (2, 7) is the point of intersection for this system of equations.
