You find the area of each face and add them all together

the front facing square is 8 by 8
so 8 * 8 = 64
and on the back of it there is a opposite but same square
so 64 + 64 so far

then the left facing rectangle is 8 by 16
8 * 16 = 128
and the top facing rectangle is the same size
so we have in total  64+64+128+128 sofar

then here's a little confusing...
the bottom facing we can consider to be a square of (8+8) by 16
so (8+8) * 16 = 256
so we now have  64+64+128+128+256

the surface area of a cylinder (which is what the rounded part is)
is  2*(area of circle) + (circumference of circle)*(height)
= 2*(pi * 8 * 8) + (16 pi)*(16) = 384 pi
then divide this number by 4 because we have only a fourth of the full cylinder
384 pi / 4 = 96pi
