To get the electrons jumping in the first place, batteries use
two different kinds of metal. A special liquid is put
between them. That liquid dissolves a little of the metal.
This releases electrons.

Because the metals are different, one gives up electrons
more easily than the other. The other takes them more
easily. So the electrons start to move from one metal to the
other through the liquid. This creates a current. And that is
how batteries generate electricity!
