In the 1880s many young women in large cities worked at home sewing clothing. They were paid by the piece, hence the name piecework for this type of labor. A pants stitcher would add waistbands and pockets to a pair of pants and would be paid 12.5 cents for each completed pair. A worker could generally finish 16 pairs of pants a week while working 5 days a week for about 10 hours a day. (a) What would the hourly rate of pay be for a piecework seamstress in the 1880s?
