Researchers study the population of bass in a lake. The researchers catch, tag, and release 50 bass into the lake. During a fishing tournament the following week, competitors catch and release 525 bass, 15 of which had been previously tagged by the researchers. Here is their argument. given the obtuse angle x, we make a quadrilateral abcd with ∠dab = x, and ∠abc = 90◦, and ad = bc. say the perpendicular bisector to dc meets the perpendicular bisector to ab at p. then pa = pb and pc = pd. so the triangles pad and pbc have equal sides and are congruent. thus ∠pad = ∠pbc. but pab is isosceles, hence ∠pab = ∠pba. subtracting, gives x = ∠pad−∠pab = ∠pbc −∠pba = 90◦. this is a preposterous conclusion – just where is the mistake in the "proof" and why does the argument break down there?

The decibel level of sound is 50 db greater on a busy street than in a quiet room where the intensity of sound is watt/m2. the level of sound in the quiet room is db, and the intensity of sound in the busy street is watt/m2. use the formula , where is the sound level in decibels, i is the intensity of sound, and is the smallest sound intensity that can be heard by the human ear (roughly equal to watts/m2).
