you multiply second equation by 2

12x-8y=12

12x+8y= -60

then you add

which is

24x=72

then you do 24 ÷24

and 72÷24 which is 3

so x is 3

then substitute x

so 12x(3) +8y=12

36+8y=12

then 8y - 8 and 12-8

so 36÷36 and 4÷36

so y is 9
