a. As the denominator (i.e. 20) in 1120 has only 2 and 5 as prime factors, 20=2×2×5, we can easily convert denominator as a power of 10, by multiplying it by 5.

Hence 1120=11×520×5

= 55100=50+5100

= 50100+5100

= 510+5100 i.e. 5 one-tenths and 5 one-hundredths

This is nothing but 0.55

b. Explanation:

To convert a fraction to a decimal, just divide the numerator by the denominator.

Since 8 is larger than 5, in order to divide, we must add a decimal point and some zeroes after the 5. We may not know how many zeroes to add but it doesn’t matter.

If we add too many we can erase the extras; if we don’t add enough, we can add more.
