In a real life situation you can represent -42 by saying your bank account has -42 dollars. Meaning that you owe money to the bank.

let's cover over the formula of the vertex:

in this formula, (h,k) are the vertex, always remember that the positive or negative value of the vertex is based on the sign it has.
