Going from f(x) = x^2 to g(x) = (x+4)^2, we replaced x with x+4

So g(x) = f(x+4) more or less

When we replace x with x+4, each input x is now 4 units larger (eg: x = 7 goes to x+4 = 7+4 = 11). This moves the entire xy axis 4 units to the right. If we kept the parabola y = x^2 fixed in place while the axis moves, then it gives the illusion the parabola has moved 4 units to the left.

So that's why y = x^2 moves four units to the left to arrive at y = (x+4)^2

You can see it with the vertex point (0,0) on y = x^2 moving to (-4,0) on y = (x+4)^2
