The outcome of the year 2000 presidential election was determined in Florida amid much controversy. The main race was between George W. Bush and Al Gore, but a minor candidate, Pat Buchanan, played a significant role. The so-called "butterfly ballot", used only in Palm Beach County, played a major role in the controversy surrounding the election. It has been claimed that the format of this ballot confused voters so that some who intended to vote for the Democrat, Al Gore, punched the wrong hole next to his name and, as a result, voted for Buchanan. This Excel file shows the original vote totals by Florida county for Gore, Bush, and Buchanan as of November 8, 2000 (these data reflect the results prior to the hand recount that was done due to other problems with the election (e. g., the "hanging chad" problem). A. Use the county-by-county results, excluding Palm Beach County, in the Excel file to find the slope and intercept of the least squares prediction line y^^\^.
B. Perform a hypothesis test to test if the number of Gore votes is useful for predicting the number of Buchanan votes (exclude the Palm Beach County data). State the hypotheses, show the formula for the value of the test statistic and the value of the test statistic; state your conclusion in the context of the problem, use the rejection region or as the basis for your conclusion.
C. Interpret the value of for this data (exclude the Palm Beach County data when <# determining).
D. From the file we see that Buchanan received 3,407 votes in Palm Beach County. Construct a 99% prediction interval for the number of votes you would expect Buchanan to receive in Palm Beach County.
