The feed n ship ranch fattens cattle for local farmers and ships them to meat markets in kansas city and omaha. the owners of the ranch seek to determine the amounts of cattle feedto buy so that minimum nutritional standards are satisfied, and at the same time total feed cost are minimized. the feed mix can be made up of three grains that contain the following ingredients per pound of feed:

feed (oz)

ingredient stock x stock y stock z

a 3 2 4

b 2 3 1

c 1 0 2

d 6 8 4

the cost per pound of stocks x, y, and z are $2, $4, and $2.50 respectively. the minimum requirement per cow per month is 4 pounds of ingredient a, 5 pounds of ingredient b, 1 pound of ingredient c, and 8 pounds of ingredient d.

the ranch faces one additional restriction: it can only obtain 500 pounds of stock z per month from the feed supplier regardless of its need. because there are usually 100 cows at the feed n ship ranch at any given time, this means that no more than 5 pounds of stock z can be counted on for use in the feed of each cow per month.

a) formulate this as an lp problem

b) solve using lp software

Browning labs is testing a new growth inhibitor for a certain type of bacteria. the bacteria naturally grows exponentially each hour at a rate of 6.2%. the researchers know that the inhibitor will make the growth rate of the bacteria less than or equal to its natural growth rate. the sample currently contains 100 bacteria.the container holding the sample can hold only 300 bacteria, after which the sample will no longer grow. however, the researchers are increasing the size of the container at a constant rate allowing the container to hold 100 more bacteria each hour. they would like to determine the possible number of bacteria in the container over time.create a system of inequalities to model the situation above, and use it to determine how many of the solutions are viable.

Astudent is determining the influence of different types of food on the growth rate of spiders. she feeds one group of spiders two caterpillars twice a week. the other group received similarly-sized beetles twice a week. she records the amount of time required for individuals to reach sexual maturity. her hypothesis is that the spiders feeding on caterpillars will have a faster growth rate because caterpillars have a higher protein content compared to beetles. in this experiment, what is the dependent variable? spiders assigned to different feeding groups. time required to reach sexual maturity number of prey items fed twice a week. growth rates of each group.
