Let the rate of the hiker 1 be ‘x’ and the rate of the hiker 2 be (x+2.2). We have to find out the rate of each hiker if they meet each other in 10 hours

We know,

Distance = speed × time.

In the question it is given that the distance is 44 miles.

Using the equation we will try to find out the rate of each hiker.

44 = (x)10 + (x+2.2)10

44 = 10x + 10x + 22

44-22 = 20x

20 = 20x

x = 1

Therefore the rate of hiker 1 = 1 miles per hour and the rate of hiker 2 = (1+2.2) = 3.2 miles per hour
