When determining whether a sequence of vectors in an abstract vector space is linearly dependent or independent, we create a homogeneous linear system in which the unknowns are the coefficients of linear combinations giving the zero vector (dependence relations). without mentioning "coordinate vectors", where do the entries (numbers) in the matrix corresponding to this homogeneous linear system come from when the vectors
