Iwill give a one of your friends missed the class on scientific notation. describe how you would explain to your friend what it means for a number to be in scientific notation and how to convert a number from standard form to scientific notation.

Scientific notation is a way to show large numbers in a compact way, atleast that's my description.

In scientific notation to show the number 1000 we would use 1 * 10^3 this shows us 10^3 is 1,000 multiplied by one is still 1,000

the 10^3 is how many zeros there are for example 10^3 has three zeros and 10^5 would have five zeros 

if we have 1.5 * 10^5 it would be 15 followed by four zeroes. the reason for this is because the .5 takes the place of one of the zeroes making the number 150,000. if we had 1.55 * 10^5 it would be 155 followed by three zeroes because the .55  takes the place of two zeroes. each decimal point takes the place of a zero.
