HEL Sue Ridgepipe is a taxpayer in the very rural district of East Nowhere, New York. East Nowhere Public School is failing by all federal, state, and local measures. The state has offered vouchers to students to attend private school. These vouchers will allow students to attend private school for free or at a reduced cost to the student but are funded by taxpayer dollars. The only private school in within a 50 mile radius is Saint Pope’s Very Catholic School for Christians. Sue, an atheist, does not believe her tax dollars should be used to help offset the cost of private religious education for students in her town. She sues the state for violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The case makes its way to the Supreme Court.
