In 1966 a new effort to control the people in China was set by Mao Tse-tung. A group of young teenagers and some college students were to complete this task. This military force was called the Red Guards. Groups of Red Guards traveled from city to city to hold marches, demonstrations and to eliminate the customs and traditional thoughts of the old China. They carried Mao portraits, banners and flags. Some of the members of the group beat gongs and drums when Red Guard units were to search homes to “Destroy the Old Four” – old ideas, old culture, old customs and old habits. They also persecuted local party leaders, schoolteachers, school officials, intellectuals, as well as persons of traditional views. Several hundred thousand people died in the course of these persecutions and by 1967 Red Guard units had overthrown party authorities. However they soon began fighting among themselves and their total disruption of industrial production and of Chinese urban life caused their gradual subside.
