Korah, Dathan and Abiram led a group of 250 community leaders in protesting Moses' leadership over the people.  They said, "“You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?” (Numbers 16:3).

Moses told them to put incense in their incense burners and stand before the Lord, and he and Aaron (his brother, the high priest) did the same.  Moses warned the rest of the people to stay back from the side of Korah, Dathan, Abiram and those with them.  God opened up the earth and had the ground swallow up Korah, Dathan and Abiram and their households, and fire from God burned up the 250 leaders who had stood with them against Moses.  (See the story in Numbers 16.)
