Why did industrialization develop rapidly in the northeast

The number of rivers allowed hydroelectricity and steam engines to power early factories. Rivers also gave factories a place to dump waste in the 1800s and early 1900s (before the environmental effects were known). The proximity to shipping ports made it easy for goods to be produced and then brought to harbors where they could be shipped overseas.
