Why were the 1920's considered the best and worst of times?

The 1920s were one of the most dramatic periods of change and growth in the history of this country. As the decade opened, the United States was moving away from the big government philosophy of the Woodrow Wilson Administration which was exemplified by high taxes, deficit financing and increasing regulation of the private sector.
