How were the lives of african women altered by colonial economies?

Prior to colonization, women worked side by side with men. After colonization, women took on more of the domestic duties like their white female counterparts. Women stayed home and tended to the children and small farms. The men often left to work in the cities. 

The goods the europeans wanted the most were gold, jewels, silk, perfumes, and especially spices.
