The Armenians did not wanted to give up on their ethnicity, nor their religion. That angered the Ottoman authorities, and afraid that the Armenians might try and separate part of their territory, they started to systematically perform genocide on them, with the end result being over 1.5 million dead Armenians, and many more separated from their families and homes forever.
